Newdigate Road station

This is a medium sized station on the secondary route from Orltons Junction to Russ Hill via Smallfields Station. Here you will find five platform faces, ‘Up’ and ‘Down’ goods yards and Gasworks junction at the ‘Up’ end, heading west to Glovers Lane. ‘Down’ trains from Russ Hill and Glovers Lane pass through platforms 1 and 2 with traffic in the other direction using platforms 3 to 5.

A wide variety of local traffic is dealt with by a single operator via two controllers. In addition, there are empty mainline stock, excursions, and terminating trains to be dealt with. The empty sleeper stock is stabled in the ‘Up’ yard until required by the timetable and various other passenger and freight stock terminate or start their journeys here.  As an example, the Ore train arrives in Platform 1 and awaits the passing of a couple of following trains through Platform 2. When the line is clear the locomotive draws the train forward onto the ‘Down’ running line. Points are set and the entire train is reversed across the ‘Up’ lines into the goods yard. The loco leaves, running light, immediately or may be rostered for another stabled train later.

Operators at this station need to keep a close eye on the timetable to ensure they don’t “miss” a train! This station is probably the best location for training novice operators.
