RUSPER MODEL RAILWAY CLUB

We are in the Hayes area of the London Borough of Bromley

The single line branch from Orltons Junction ends at Smallfields station where ‘Up’ trains run into an island platform 3 on the right. ‘Down’ trains pass through on the other side of this island, platform 2, when the single line is clear. A second platform serves terminating ‘Down’ trains as platform 1.

There is a small goods yard with a head shunt alongside a stabling road parallel to Platform 1 road. At the ‘Up’ end of the station the line to Newdigate Road is doubled and complex point work allows access to the ‘Up’ line from the terminus road and head shunt. Holiday makers in the adjacent camping coach can watch the general comings and goings on the railway if they are so inclined!

A duty here involves local trains, both through and those terminating, plus block freight, pick up goods, railcars, light engines and empty stock, all whilst making sure the single line is clear before sending trains along to Orltons Junction. As a “surprise”, the ‘Down’ road through platform 2 is occasionally used by empty stock heading for Newdigate Road to “overtake” other trains in Platform 3 so operators need to stay on their toes!
